No external party — venue, organiser, PR agency, or advertiser — has any say in the final verdict.
How we conduct reviews
Reviews may be based on a variety of experiences:
- Venue visits, restaurant meals, hotel stays
- Theatre performances, concerts, festivals, and other cultural events
- Press access or review tickets offered by organisers
- Product tests conducted by our team
- Publicly available experiences (e.g., a critic attending a show as a regular ticket holder)
Review access — whether complimentary tickets, press passes, or sample products — never guarantees positive coverage. The reviewer and editorial team retain full editorial independence. Any commercial relationship, advertising deal, or sponsorship has no bearing on the content or rating of a review.
Disclosure and transparency
Every review includes a standard disclosure statement, placed clearly within the article, usually at the end. The format is as follows:
Disclosure: This review is based on [event visit/review ticket/venue visit/public booking]. Access was provided by [venue/organiser/agency] where applicable. The provider had no control over the final editorial assessment.
If no access was provided and the critic attended as a paying customer, we state that too. We believe transparency builds trust with our readers.
Commercial separation
Reviews are produced by our editorial team, entirely separate from commercial operations. Who writes our reviews
Our reviews are assigned by the editorial team, primarily under the oversight of Sophie Kendall, Culture & Events Editor, and Rebecca Haines, Managing Editor. All reviewers follow our editorial policy and standards set out by our team. Fact-checking and source verification are handled by Thomas Ellery, Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, who also reviews any corrections or sensitive claims arising from review content.
